OPEC to meet amid Iran-Saudi tensions

VIENNA (AP) ? Once the symbol of oil dominance, OPEC faces new challenges as its members gather for a ministerial meeting this week on how much crude to pump.

For the 12 oil ministers from countries ranging from Venezuela to Nigeria and Iran, the formal focus of Friday's get-together is to determine production levels. The consensus in the markets is that ministers will opt to maintain the status quo as prices for U.S. benchmark oil have traded in a narrow range a few dollars above $90 a barrel. Brent crude, the reference point for many international oil varieties, is just above the $100 mark some countries OPEC exporters consider the acceptable minimum.

With prices largely at acceptable levels, the ministers are expected to maintain the cartel's target at 30 million barrels a day. However, members may be asked to cut back on overproduction, now said to be running at nearly 500,000 barrels a day.

On his arrival in Vienna on Tuesday, Saudi Oil Minister Ali Naimi described the status quo as "the best environment for the market."

For analysts at Commerzbank in Frankfurt, that was a clear signal there would be little or no change in policy ? the Saudis are the main driver of OPEC policy. As such, said a Commerzbank note, it is "unlikely that Friday's OPEC meeting will result in any change to production policy."

Reinforcing that prediction, Libyan Oil Minister Abdelbari al-Arusi told reporters on Thursday that Friday's meeting will "maintain the production level and prices."

Beyond prices and output, though, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries faces other more complex issues, ranging from the ramp up in shale oil production in the U.S. and a potentially destabilizing spat between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

The rise in shale oil production in the U.S., the world's biggest economy, has an impact on OPEC as the country remains a main market for OPEC. Shale oil, which is extracted from rocks using heat, helped lift the U.S.'s total output up to a daily 7.4 million barrels per day this month.

The Paris-based International Energy Agency says total production could top 9 million barrels a day by 2018, which would mean near self-sufficiency for the U.S. as well as significantly less dependence on OPEC imports. It would also swell the U.S. influence on prices that OPEC polices have largely determined in the past.

Even so, OPEC will continue to be a major player on global crude supply as it still produces about a third of the world's oil. IEA chief Maria van der Hoeven said earlier this month that the organization "will remain an essential part of the oil mix for as long as we can tell."

Still, already frayed OPEC unity stands to further suffer as a result of fears of less dependency on its product.

OPEC powerhouse Saudi Arabia and its Gulf partners have the strength to adjust to cheaper oil prices. Naimi, the Saudi minister, recently said there was no need to fear new supplies because "there is enough (demand) to go around" for all oil exporters.

Others, such as Iran, Venezuela and some African producers, disagree, saying they need oil above $100 a barrel to do business.

Angola is among OPEC members that could suffer from less U.S. foreign oil dependency. But Angolan Oil Minister Jose Maria Botelho de Vasconcelos shrugged off any potential damage from that scenario Thursday, telling reporters that "there are other markets."

Divisions also exist along political lines.

Iran is losing hundreds of thousands of barrels a day in oil sales due to international embargoes related to its nuclear program. Along with Venezuela, the country is angry that Saudi Arabia has sought to plug the gap left by overproducing.

Ahead of Friday's meeting, Venezuelan oil minister Rafael Ramirez told reporters that some OPEC countries were producing above their quotas for "geopolitical reasons" ? an apparent allusion to the Saudis, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

Saudi-Iranian rivalries also continue to stymie OPEC attempts to appoint a new secretary-general, who is the organization's voice between ministerial meetings.

Iran has put forward Gholam-Hossein Nozari, a former oil minister, while Saudi Arabia is nominating OPEC veteran Majid El-Munif as its candidate.

Present Secretary General Abdullah Al-Badry of Libya has already been extended several times because of the deadlock, perhaps the most visible sign of cracks in the organization's facade of unity.

With no sign that either nation was withdrawing its candidate, attention was focusing on Iraqi contender Thamir Ghadhban as a possible compromise. But any decision was likely to be deferred to a future meeting.

Jonathan Vows To Fully Implement National Broadband Plan To ...

President Goodluck Jonathan pledged today in Abuja that his administration will take immediate steps to fully implement the report of the Presidential Committee on a National Broadband Strategy and Roadmap.

Speaking after receiving the report which was jointly presented to him by the Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson and the
Co-Chairmen of the Committee, Dr. Ernest Ndukwe and Mr. Jim Ovia, President Jonathan said that he was confident that the successful implementation of
the National Broadband Strategy and Roadmap will help to positively revolutionize communications in Nigeria.

President Jonathan said that he wholly subscribed to the committee's view that broadband is to the 21st century information age what electricity was to the industrial age and would therefore give the fullest possible support
to the effort to ensure that Nigeria is wholly integrated into the global digital communications network.

"Any country that lags behind in the current age of ICT will miss a lot. That is why we have created a separate Ministry of Communications Technology to facilitate the establishment of the best digital communications infrastructure in Nigeria and optimize our adoption of global best practices in the use of information and communications
technology.

"I thank you for your work and I assure you that the report will be adopted by government and implementation will begin immediately because our people
are hungry for information and we are in a hurry to fully integrate our country into the digital communications age," the President told members of the committee.

The Committee, which was established in September 2012 to develop a broadband strategy and roadmap for Nigeria, said that the key objectives of the plan which it has evolved are: to promote pervasive broadband deployment in the country; increase broadband adoption and usage and ensure the availability of broadband services at affordable prices to maximize its
socio-economic and political benefits.

It is expected that in the 2013-2018 implementation period a fivefold increase in internet and broadband penetration will be achieved in the country.

It is also intended that all state capitals and urban cities will have
metro-fibre infrastructure installed within the period.

Epigenetic biomarkers may predict if a specific diet and exercise regimen will work

May 30, 2013 ? Would you be more likely to try a diet and exercise regimen if you knew in advance if it would actually help you lose weight? Thanks to a new report published in the June 2013 issue of The FASEB Journal, this could become a reality. In the report, scientists identify five epigenetic biomarkers in adolescents that were associated with a better weight loss at the beginning of a weight loss program. Not only could this could ultimately help predict an individual's response to weight loss intervention, but it may offer therapeutic targets for enhancing a weight loss program's effects.

"Successful obesity treatment during adolescence could reduce morbidity at later stages of life and lead to a better quality of life," said Amelia Mart?, Ph.D., Pharm. D., co-author of this study from the Department of Nutrition, Food Science, Physiology and Toxicology at the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. "It is crucial to find new markers for obesity treatment. Here, we describe five putative epigenetic biomarkers that could help to predict the response to a weight loss intervention in obese adolescents."

To make this discovery, Mart? and colleagues first performed a global methylation assay in 24 adolescents who had the best and worst response to the EVASYON weight loss program, and then expanded the sample to include 83 more adolescents. Researchers measured an epigenetic marker, DNA methylation levels, in obese adolescents from a blood sample at baseline and again at the end of the 10-week program. Participants were then divided into two groups (high and low responders) according to the weight loss achieved. The researchers found that the baseline DNA methylation levels of five epigenetic markers were associated with better weight loss response. This EVASYON program is a lifestyle and nutritional educational weight loss program that includes a multidisciplinary team of nutritionists, physiotherapists, psychologists and pediatricians. EVASYON was conducted in five Spanish cities: Granada, Madrid, Pamplona, Santander and Zaragoza.

"If you've ever wondered why some people seem to do so well on a diet and exercise plan and other fail so miserably, then now we know that the way that genes express themselves (via epigenetics) plays an important role," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. "This report moves us a step closer when we will be able to prescribe a weight loss program tailored to more than just the lifestyle and conditioning level of the patient, but also to his or her particular genetic and epigenetic profile."

RI Gov. Chafee, once independent, joins Democrats

WARWICK, R.I. (AP) ? Gov. Lincoln Chafee joined the Democratic Party on Thursday, leaving behind his status as the nation's only independent governor and shaking off the last of his Republican legacy.

Chafee told reporters after he changed his affiliation at Warwick City Hall that he made the switch because of his alignment with national Democrats on issues such as health care reform, and because of his respect for the leadership of President Barack Obama.

"I've got a home and it feels good," he said. He said he doesn't expect to agree with Democrats on all the issues, but that, "there comes a time when the issues are so big, you want to be part of a team."

Chafee said his priorities and beliefs have not changed and encouraged Rhode Islanders to look at his record as proof.

Chafee's late father was U.S. Sen. John Chafee, a former governor whose name was synonymous with the Republican Party in Rhode Island for decades. When asked what his father would think of the switch, Chafee replied: "He'd be standing right here patting me on the back."

A close Republican ally of Chafee's, Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian, told The Associated Press that Chafee has always been an independent leader and a "free thinker" and he didn't expect Chafee's views or priorities to change.

Chafee was a longtime Republican who became an independent in 2007, a year after losing his seat in the U.S. Senate. When John Chafee died in office in 1999, Lincoln Chafee was appointed to fill his seat and then won re-election to the post the following year.

In the Senate, he voted to the left of many Democrats, opposing the war in Iraq, for example. But he stuck it out as a Republican through his 2006 re-election campaign, brushing off questions at the time about why he didn't switch parties. He lost to Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse.

Chafee made a political comeback in 2010, winning a four-way race for governor with 36 percent of the vote.

He is facing a tough fight when he runs for a second term next year. As governor, Chafee has struggled with poor approval ratings. Some of his policy proposals, such as an early plan to expand the sales tax, have fizzled in the face of opposition in the Democratic-controlled General Assembly.

Two well-known Democrats, Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and Treasurer Gina Raimondo, have indicated they're interested in running for governor.

Chafee is a reluctant fundraiser, and he has often relied on his personal wealth to fund his campaigns. He has said it is tough to raise money as a political independent, and told the AP in December that he was considering joining the Democrats to help his chances of winning a second term.

He may be banking in part on his strong relationship with Obama to give him a lift among voters and in his campaign account. Obama said on Wednesday he was thrilled to welcome Chafee to the party, although stopped short of an endorsement.

Although registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans nearly 4-to-1 in Rhode Island, the state has not had a Democratic governor for years. Chafee will become the first Democrat to hold the seat since 1995.

Motorcycle injuries worsen with weaker helmet law

FILE - In this June 12, 2008 file photo, Randy Knauff takes off from work without a helmet on his motorcycle in Harmony, Pa. Across the nation, motorcyclists opposed to mandatory helmet use have been chipping away at state helmet laws for years while crash deaths have been on the rise. (AP) ? The average medical claim from a motorcycle crash rose by more than one-fifth last year in Michigan after the state stopped requiring all riders to wear helmets, according to an insurance industry study. Across the nation, motorcyclists opposed to mandatory helmet use have been chipping away at state helmet laws for years while crash deaths have been on the rise.

For more than 40 years, Michigan required all motorcycle riders to wear helmets. State legislators changed the law last year so that only riders younger than 21 must wear helmets. The average insurance payment on a motorcycle injury claim was $5,410 in the two years before the law was changed, and $7,257 after it was changed ? an increase of 34 percent, the study by the Highway Loss Data Institute found.

After adjusting for the age and type of motorcycle, rider age, gender, marital status, weather and other factors, the actual increase was about 22 percent relative to a group of four comparative states, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin, the study found.

"The cost per injury claim is significantly higher after the law changed than before, which is consistent with other research that shows riding without a helmet leads to more head injuries," said David Zuby, chief research officer for the data institute and an affiliated organization, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The data institute publishes insurance loss statistics on most car, SUV, pickup truck and motorcycle models on U.S. roads.

While other studies have shown an increase motorcycle deaths after states eliminate or weaken mandatory helmet requirements, the industry study is the first to look specifically at the effect of repealing helmet requirements on the severity of injuries as measured by medical insurance claims, Zuby said.

Some states have sought to mitigate the repeal or loosening of mandatory helmet laws by setting minimum medical insurance requirements, but "that doesn't even come close to covering the lifelong care of somebody who is severely brain-injured and who cannot work and who is going to be on Medicaid and a ward of the state," said Jackie Gillan, president of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, which backs mandatory helmet requirements for all riders.

Jeff Hennie, vice president of the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, dismissed the study, saying the insurance industry views helmets as "the silver bullet that's going to change the landscape of motorcycle safety." He said insurers are upset because "life has gotten more expensive for them and they have to pay out more."

"The fact is our highways are bloody," Hennie said. "This (the Michigan helmet law change) doesn't make helmets illegal. ... No one is forcing anyone to ride without a helmet."

Vince Consiglio, president of American Bikers Aimed Toward Education of Michigan, blamed the increase in the severity of injuries on bikers who don't take safety courses required to obtain a special motorcycle license. He said bikers without motorcycle licenses have made up an increasingly larger share of fatalities and injuries in recent years.

But Gillan said the study "clearly shows there is no such thing as a free ride, and the public is paying the cost for this."

There's no way to know how many of the Michigan claims involved motorcyclists not wearing helmets, the study said. But another recent study by the University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute found a significant increase in motorcyclists involved in crashes who weren't wearing helmets after the law changed. From April 13, 2012, the first full day after the change took effect, through the end of the year, 74 percent of motorcyclists involved in crashes were wearing helmets, compared with 98 percent in the same period for the previous four years, the study found.

Nationally, motorcycle deaths have risen in 14 of the past 15 years, and appear to have reached an all-time high of more than 5,000, according to an analysis by the Governors Highway Safety Association of preliminary 2012 data.

Currently, 19 states and the District of Columbia require all motorcyclists to wear a helmet, 28 states require only some motorcyclists ? usually younger or novice riders ? to wear a helmet, and three states have no helmet use law. States have been gradually repealing or weakening mandatory helmet laws for nearly two decades.

In 1967, to increase motorcycle helmet use, the federal government required that states enact helmet laws in order to qualify for certain federal safety programs and highway construction aid. The federal incentive worked. By the early 1970s, almost all states had motorcycle helmet laws that covered all riders. In 1976, Congress stopped the Transportation Department from assessing financial penalties on states without helmet laws, and state lawmakers began repealing the statutes.

In 1991, Congress created new incentives for states to enact helmet and seat belt laws, but reversed itself four years later.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which sent observers to states last year to count how many motorcyclists wore helmets, found that 97 percent of motorcyclists in states with universal helmet laws were wearing helmets compared with 58 percent of motorcyclists in states without such coverage.

Conservative Bachmann will not seek re-election to Congress

By Fred Barbash

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Michele Bachmann, the firebrand conservative 2012 presidential contender, said Wednesday she will not seek re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives when her term ends but did not rule out another run for the White House.

Bachmann, a Minnesota Republican, said that four two-year terms was enough time for anyone to serve in the House. She gave no specific reason for not seeking a fifth term.

She made the announcement in a polished 8-1/2 minute video posted on her campaign website in which she sat in front of a bookcase and spoke over light rock music reminiscent of political ads.

Bachmann faced a House challenge from Democrat Jim Graves, who came within 1 percentage point of beating her in 2012. But fear of a difficult race in 2014 was not her reason for leaving the House, she said in the video.

"I have every confidence that if I ran, I would again defeat the individual who I defeated last year," said Bachmann, whose term ends in early January 2015.

Bachmann also said that ethics probes being conducted by the Federal Election Commission and Office of Congressional Ethics into the handling of money for her presidential race were not a factor in her decision.

"It was clearly understood that compliance with all rules and regulations was an absolute necessity for my presidential campaign, and I have no reason to believe that that was not the case," she said.

Bachmann's campaign for the 2012 Republican nomination, which centered around charges that President Barack Obama was putting the United States "on the road to socialism," brought her wide attention. But much of her message was negative thanks to regular misstatements of fact.

While she had a conservative following, she placed sixth among the contenders for caucus votes in the conservative state of Iowa in January, 2012, getting only 5 percent of the vote and prompting her withdrawal from contention.

Bachmann was the author of numerous bills in the House, including her own measure to repeal the Obama administration healthcare law, but she generally could muster support only from a handful of like-minded conservatives.

In the video, Bachmann thanked her husband, five children and 23 foster children and said she would use the remainder of her congressional term to fight to protect "innocent human life, traditional marriage, family values, religious liberty and academic excellence."

"I will continue to work 100-hour weeks and I will continue to do everything that I can to advance our conservative constitutional principles," she said.

Apple CEO sees more 'gamechangers'; hints at wearable devices

By Alexei Oreskovic

RANCHOS PALOS VERDES, California (Reuters) - Apple Inc Chief Executive Tim Cook said on Tuesday he expects the iPhone and iPad maker would be responsible for "several more gamechangers" and that wearable computers could be the next big thing.

"It's an area where it's ripe for exploration," Cook told an All Things Digital conference, an annual gathering of technology and media executives in the California coastal resort town of Rancho Palos Verdes.

"It's ripe for us all getting excited about. I think there will be tons of companies playing in this."

His remarks come at a time when worries are mounting that the company which created the smartphone and tablet markets is no longer at the top of its game, with a slowdown in earnings growth hitting its share price.

Cook stopped short of saying if Apple was working on wearable products, but added that wearable computers had to be compelling and that Google Inc's Glass -- a cross between a mobile computer and eyeglasses that can both record video and surf the Internet -- is likely to have only limited appeal.

"There's nothing that's going to convince a kid who has never worn glasses or a band or a watch to wear one, or at least I haven't seen it," he said. "So I think there's lots of things to solve in this space."

Cook also said he has a "grand vision" for television that goes beyond an existing $99 Apple TV streaming device, but did not go into details. The company has maintained for years that it harbors an interest in the TV arena.

When asked if Apple has lost its cool, Cook said "absolutely not" and went on to list statistics of device sales and usage. He, however, acknowledged that he was frustrated with the sudden downturn in the firm's stock price.

Since hitting a record close of $702.10 last September, the world's largest technology company has shed 44 percent, losing more than $280 billion of market value - or more than the entire market capitalization of Google.

In April, Apple reported its first quarterly profit decline in over a decade and was also shunned by some well-known fund managers in the first quarter, with John Griffin's Blue Ridge Capital selling off its shares and Chase Coleman's Tiger Global Management sharply cutting their position.

Cook has tried to reset heightened expectations around the company and he has stressed that the company's position remains strong and has opened up more of its treasure trove to investors, doubling its cash return program to $100 billion by the end of 2015.

Cook's appearance at the conference follows his grilling by a Senate panel last week about Apple's tax management strategy.

The Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations has found that Apple in 2012 avoided paying $9 billion in U.S. taxes, using a strategy involving three offshore units with no discernible tax home, or "residence".

But Cook, in his first congressional testimony since becoming Apple CEO in 2011, said his company is a major taxpayer, handing over nearly $6 billion in cash to the U.S. government in 2012.

Referring to the testimony, Cook said he felt strongly about the conclusions the subcommittee arrived at.

"So I thought it was very important to go tell our story and to view that as an opportunity instead of a pain in the ass."

AMD's Opteron X-series targets Intel Atom for the microserver CPU market

AMD unveils a pair of Opteron CPU's targeting microservers, Intel's Atom S chips

AMD might not be able to keep up (down?) with Intel in the CPU power consumption race, so it's taking another tack with the new Opteron X-series: horsepower. It just announced the Opteron X1150 and X2150 64-bit processors for microservers, part of the Jaguar-codenamed family of CPUs arriving in the next-gen Xbox One and Sony PS4 consoles. Thanks to its ultra-low power 6-watt Atom S1200 chips, Intel excels in the low-power server market, and at 9W and 11W respectively (minimum), AMD's CPUs consume considerably more juice. But AMD is pitching them as a better solution overall, thanks to those four cores (compared to two in the Atom), integrated AMD Radeon HD 8000 graphics on the X2150 model, support for 32GB of RAM and integrated SATA ports. AMD's chips are pricier, though, at $64 (X1150) or $99 (X2150) compared to $54 for Intel's Atom S1200 (all in quantities of 1,000). To top it off, Intel has new 64-bit Atom SoCs coming soon promising even lower power consumption -- possibly leaving AMD to play catch-up again.

U.S. congressmen in Russia on Boston bombing fact-finding mission

MOSCOW (Reuters) - U.S. congressmen will meet security officials in Moscow this week to find out whether the FBI could have done more with Russian intelligence on the Boston bombing suspect to prevent the attack, one of the lawmakers said on Wednesday.

U.S. President Barack Obama's administration and the intelligence community face scrutiny over criticism they failed to see the danger from Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his younger brother Dzhokhar - the prime suspects in the twin bombings that killed three people and injured over 170 at the Boston Marathon.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, who was killed in a shootout with police, spent six months last year in Dagestan, a southern Russian province where Moscow is battling an Islamist insurgency.

U.S. Representative Dana Rohrabacher, a California Republican leading the fact-finding mission, said it wanted to find out whether the FBI acted strongly enough on Russian information that Tsarnaev was a potential threat.

"One of the things we want to find out is whether or not the FBI followed through on all of the information that was given to them," Rohrabacher said.

He said he and fellow congressmen Steve King, Paul Cook, Steve Cohen and William Keating were interested in how Tsarnaev's time in Dagestan may have radicalized him.

Although Washington and Moscow have vowed cooperate closely on counter-terrorism, both sides have accused each other of withholding information in the run-up to the bombing.

U.S. officials have said Russian security services asked the FBI about Tamerlan in early 2011 out of concern he had embraced radical Islam and would travel to Russia to join insurgents.

FBI agents interviewed him in Massachusetts in 2011 but said they found no serious reason for alarm. U.S. officials say Russia's FSB security services later failed to respond to the FBI's requests for more information about him.

Tsarnaev flew to Russia the following year on January 12.

New buyers for cards to benefit cancer charity

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? A 7-year-old cancer patient who had a trading card issued in his honor after he ran roughshod over the Nebraska Cornhuskers has found new buyers for cards set aside for his charity.

Among those stepping up: actor James Denton, who was on "Desperate Housewives."

Video of Jack Hoffman's run during Nebraska's spring football game was an Internet hit. The Upper Deck Co. issued a card for Jack, with signed blow-ups for his foundation to auction off.

The winning bidder for the first card declined to pay, saying he hadn't authorized the $6,100 bid. Jack's father, Andy Hoffman, says news coverage prompted three buyers to offer $10,000 each for a signed card.

Denton lives in suburban Minneapolis, and the Hoffmans traveled there to meet him Tuesday. They are from Atkinson, Neb.

Murdoch aims to defy naysayers with new News Corp

By Jennifer Saba

(Reuters) - Rupert Murdoch tried to convince Wall Street on Tuesday that there is still money to be made in newspapers, reminding investors that he had defied skeptics over the past 60 years to build one of the world's biggest media empires.

As News Corp prepares to separate its publishing business from its entertainment assets, Murdoch said that while some brands face individual challenges, as a whole the publishing portfolio is "undervalued and underdeveloped."

"I am not saying I didn't make many mistakes along the way -even some spectacular ones," Murdoch said at a meeting in Manhattan to sell investors on the new publishing company.

"You may be wondering why I want to do it all over again," the 82-year-old media mogul said. "The simple answer is: there is opportunity everywhere."

The new publishing company, which will retain the News Corp name, officially kicks off on June 28 with properties such as: The Wall Street Journal, Dow Jones Newswires, The Times of London, Australian pay-TV services, book publisher HarperCollins and fledgling education unit, Amplify.

The spin-off comes as newspapers face plunging advertising revenue and readers who increasingly prefer to get news for free on their smartphones and tablets. Shares of newspaper companies - once considered blue-chip investments - have tumbled over the past decade as investors fear a permanent drain in ad sales.

Against this backdrop, the publishing company's new chief executive, Robert Thomson, said there will be "relentless" cost cuts in store for the business. He gave no specifics.

News Corp executives took pains to note almost half of the publishing company's revenue comes from sources other than advertising. One revenue source is Dow Jones, which sells news and information to financial institutions and competes with Thomson Reuters Corp and Bloomberg LP.

Dow Jones CEO Lex Fenwick highlighted the introduction of a new platform, code-named DJ X. He emphasized one product, one price and one standard contract.

"If we can take a little more of institutional spend with DJ X - if we deliver that product with real value, there's a real opportunity to increase our market share," he said.

Fenwick also said Dow Jones is working on a messaging platform to compete with Bloomberg's vaunted product.

CLEAN BALANCE SHEET

Thomson, a close confident of Murdoch, ensured the new publishing company would start out with a clean balance sheet, no debt and $2 billion in cash to buffer operations and attract investors. News Corp intends to pay a dividend, but the board has yet to determine the details. It said it has authorized a share buyback of $500 million.

Still, analysts wanted to know if Murdoch intended to go shopping with his coffer of cash especially where newspapers assets are concerned - including the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune that are on the market.

Murdoch said if the "price is right" News Corp could be interested in newspapers. But he said that cross-ownership rules that prevent companies from owning top TV stations and newspapers in the same market made it "pretty unlikely."

News Corp said last Friday that it would write down the value of its Australian and U.S. publishing assets by up to $1.4 billion, potentially wiping out the company's estimated profit for the quarter ending June 30.

Thomson said the company will have "a permanent start-up sensibility." He added, "We will be relentless in our cost-cutting and in our pursuit of profits."

The new News Corp also unveiled its logo - written in a cursive script based on the handwriting of Murdoch and his father, Keith, whose Australian newspapers were the seeds of the media empire.

The Fox network, the movie studio and a set of lucrative cable properties will become a separately traded company called 21st Century Fox.

"I have been given an extraordinary opportunity most people never get in their lifetime: the chance to do it all over again," said Murdoch. (Reporting by Jennifer Saba in New York; Editing by Leslie Gevirtz and Tiffany Wu)

There is no message at my Mac (running 10.6.8); I discovered the error by drilling down through the job status menus on the printer. Our IT department informed me that the same problem exists with the latest Windows drivers. It cost them many hours to recover, which they did by reverting the drivers (and the printer firmware.) I have been unable to recover from this problem and contacted Xerox technical support, who dropped my call after going through a maze of phone menus. They did not call me back. I would suggest others consider not 'upgrading' to the latest Xerox drivers at this time."?MacInTouch?1:13 PM
